Mariella Kai is a freelance camera operator & AC based in Japan.

Since graduating from Screen Academy Scotland’s acclaimed MFA Film Programme in 2017, Kai has pursued a camera department career in film, television and commercials.

Fluency in Japanese, English, German and French proved invaluable in establishing a career across both Japanese and international sets (see below for past work).

Passionate about documentary and narrative filmmaking, Kai has written and directed short films in the UK, Thailand and Japan. They continue to be an active member of Tokyo’s independent film community pushing for greater diversity on both sides of the lens.

Kai also teaches Film, including at the Tokyo Institute of Technology ( 東京工業大学 ) at undergraduate level.
